Cancelled! ICBM Minuteman III Launch set for May 16

CANCELLED Minuteman III test launch that was set for May 16 No new date has been set. The peace vigil set for May 15 is also cancelled. below is the news story from the Lompoc paper
Another technical problem has delayed a Minuteman 3 missile launch at Vandenberg Air Force Base, marking the third postponement for the test program since early March. The test launch, once planned for May 16, has been delayed indefinitely; a new launch date hasn’t been set, according to officials with Louisiana-based Air Force Global Strike Command. “The test launch is delayed to replace a component of the test-unique instrumentation wafer on the test missile,” said Michele Tasista, a Global Strike Command spokeswoman. The problem was blamed on a command receiver decoder that is part of the missile's flight-termination safety system. That system helps ensure ground safety crews can send commands to destroy the missile if it veers from its flight path, to protect people and property. This is the same component that forced officials to delay the test from April 10, Global Strike Command officials confirmed this week. “Though this particular test-unique component is not new for the Minuteman test program, it has gone through recent modification,” Tasista said. Engineers are analyzing data and performing computer simulations to determine the cause of the problem. “Once that is determined, they will work with the safety community to determine corrective actions that will fix the component so we can resume test launches,” Tasista said. A Minuteman test planned for March 1 was delayed for a different reason, which has since been resolved. That glitch was blamed on another test-specific piece of equipment that engineers said had “a potential for loss of signal continuity in one of the redundant tracking systems.” Engineers weren’t certain a problem existed but recommended replacement of the component. The potential problem arose as engineers analyzed data from the successful Minuteman 3 missile test from the base Feb. 25. Global Strike Command officials had hoped to launch five Minuteman 3 tests in 2012. However, with the recent delays that schedule is in doubt. “The ability to conduct additional test launches in 2012 will depend on the correction of the current test-unique instrumentation issue, as well as availability of launch windows/dates for the Minuteman 3 at Vandenberg AFB,” Tasista added.
